From antiquity until today the helmet is used to protect the head from blows, possible fall, impact or some sharp object with the ultimate goal to protect the brain so as not to break the human skull and fatal death occurs.
The first protective machine helmet specifically designed to absorb the impact was created by Professor Charles F. Lombart of the University of California in 1953.
Since then, the development of the motorcycle helmet for two-wheelers has been rapid offering a plethora of advantages to the user such as sound insulation, protection of the face with ensuring visibility, comfort with safe mooring, aerodynamics, etc.
The most important advantage offered by the engine helmet is the absorption of impact energy.

Types of machine helmets and into what categories are they divided?
Over the years, different kinds of motorcycles were created. Therefore, for the corresponding type of each motorcycle, different protective helmets were constructed in order to meet the needs of each rider.
Protective helmets for two-wheelers are divided into 5 categories.
1) Full Face Machine Helmet
The Full Face machine helmet protector is the first in all categories of helmets and applies to the entire head. With its posterior part it covers the base of the human skull, and with its front part it protects the chin. Its most important advantage is increased protection from impact energy. However, many motorcycle drivers complain of high temperatures, a sense of isolation, lack of air, hair loss and hearing loss.

4) Machine Helmet Open Face / 3/4
The Open Face / 3/4 machine helmets cover the following parts of the face: the ears, cheeks, the back of the head but lack in the protective sub-jaw that has a Full Face machine helmet. However, the protective helmet of an Open Face / 3/4 machine provides exactly the same protection on the back of the human head as a Full Face machine helmet but minimal protection on the face even from unexpected events (e.g. buzzing, dust, wind)."
5) Machine Helmet Half Face / Shorty
The Half Face/Shorty machine helmet protective helmet provides the minimum protection that a protective helmet can offer to a rider although it has the exact same front as an Open Face machine helmet but without the lowering at the rear. The only way to protect oneself from possible objects is by wearing glasses.
Due to their safety inferiority to other types of machine helmets, some institutions for the safety of motorcyclists consider them prohibitive.
All the above types of protective machine helmets usually secure with a protective sub-jaw (leash) on the chin or with clips and if this is not tied or has not been tied in the right way then their protective abilities are dramatically reduced.
However, there are several types of machine helmets which are not designed for all kinds of motorcycles and yet it is observed that it is used by several drivers.
How to choose the right machine helmet?
The first and most important criterion is to meet all the necessary safety standards, i.e. to have a type-approval according to ECE R22.05 either sharp or snell.
Type-approval shall be given after up to 32 multifaceted engine helmet strength tests, carried out at a fixed non-deformable barrier (at 6,00 m/s or 21,60 Km/h, 7,50 m/s or 27,00 Km/h and 8,06 m/s or 29,00 Km/h)).
In many cases, an economical choice of a machine helmet may not meet the necessary specifications and simply has been approved only by the country of manufacture (e.g. E1 = Germany, E2 = France, etc.).
It is important to know the material of the shell of the protective machine helmet.
In almost all protective helmets their shell consists of a mixture of fiberglass, carbon, kevlar and polycarbonate.
Various scientific studies have proven that fiberglass or carbon shelled machine helmets show excellent impact resistance and high durability, while polycarbonate is an excellent material but does not show great durability and exhibits increased weight.
The second most important criterion is that the engine helmet fits appropriately on the head of each rider.
If we exclude the safety that a machine helmet should provide us with, we should also feel comfortable when we wear it (first quality fabric, hypoallergenic, etc.)
A little secret is when you try a protective machine helmet you have to wear it for at least 5 minutes and then judge if it causes you discomfort in the head.
When you remove it from your head just look in a mirror and if you see redness on your face you better choose another one.
Your cheeks need to feel a pressure, which is temporary, so that there is a proper fit. The special lining located inside the machine helmet has the ability to adapt to the shape of the face of each rider.
7 Easy and Simple Steps on How to Choose the Right Machine Helmet Protector
1) Measure the perimeter of your head.
2) Depending on the result, choose the appropriate helmet size (small, medium, large).
3) It is important that the machine helmet is stable and tight on your head while offering you comfort.

5) Hold the machine helmet well with both hands and rotate your head left and right to see if it is moving uncontrollably.

Another criterion when choosing a machine helmet is the protective windscreen.
The gelatin should be anti-glare, not engraved and fully fit during its closure.
